Database Publishing

Typotronics, a pioneer in the publishing of complicated documents from a database, has developed a unique multi-pronged approach to produce print and "new" media in conjunction with IntelliPart.

For uniform publications that lend themselves to a template approach (e.g. Interchange listings, price sheets and certain catalogs), a report writer is used. The advantages of a report writer over more traditional approaches is that the layouts are relatively easy to develop and the cost of the software is minimal. While not able to provide the flexibility of a true publishing system, a report writer can be made to support circle footnotes, automatic "keep" logic, multi-column output, dynamic sizing of braces in many-to-one and one-to-many interchanges, etc. A report writer solution is built-in to the IntelliPart offering.

For more demanding applications, several commercial publishing systems provide varying degrees of sophistication. Desktop publishing solutions are not normally a good fit for large-scale catalogs because of the interactive page-at-a-time model that they employ. High-speed batch composition systems seem to be a better fit for the demands of automotive parts cataloging. In any case, our goal is to provide an open architecture with regard to output publishing.
